I started trying out Linux a about a year ago, and never really got moving. A couple of weeks ago I discovered that Ubuntu was the problem. It took hours to configure after installing, then my configuration was irreparably damaged by a software update. It was a great weekend.
The next day I took a recommendation from my uncle-in-law and installed openSUSE. It’s been a world of difference. It installed in 20 minutes, configured in 30, and no updates have screwed it up yet. And it didn’t take nearly as much knowledge or effort to install. Besides, those Ubuntu guys can’t pick a mascot (or an adjective) that’s fitting. They have to swap them out every 6 months.

That’s weird. I had no luck with SusE a couple of years ago when I started tinkering with Linux. I had much more luck with Ubuntu, though I must admit it is a bit demanding to maintain. I have had to learn a fair but of obscure computer lingo in order to keep it working. So far so good though. I am using it right now as I type.

My experience is the exact opposite…
It seemed like days to get Ubuntu to go with my video card, and sound card. Then, the minute I get my wireless card installed, the video drivers crash, leading a chain reaction that made me want to curl up in the corner.
SUSE has been simple. I haven’t had to use the terminal yet, and it’s been a couple of weeks. I did appreciate getting to understand some of the back-end stuff but, I’m a design guy…programming isn’t really my style.
I’m glad something’s working for you, though!
